The best birthday gift for a grandchild who lives far away does two jobs. It arrives on time without leaving the parents a customs bill, and it brings you into the child's day: your voice, your face, or a story with them in it. Four kinds of gift do both well:
- a storybook or audio card that plays your voice reading to them;
- a birthday film that stars your grandchild and plays from a link, such as yume's Birthday Adventure;
- a subscription that keeps arriving in your name for months;
- a present ordered from a shop in the child's own country and opened with you on a video call.
In AARP's 2018 survey of 2,654 grandparents, over half had at least one grandchild living more than 200 miles away.

What makes a good birthday gift for a grandchild far away?
A good gift for a faraway grandchild is one the child connects with you, in a form that suits their age, that the parents are happy to have in the house. Distance changes what matters most. A child who sees you twice a year needs help remembering who the present came from, and a gift posted abroad can arrive late or with fees attached.
Age decides the form. In four studies of children aged 3 to 17, Lan Nguyen Chaplin and colleagues found that children up to about 12 got more happiness from things than from experiences, and that the preference flips in the teenage years. So a younger grandchild is usually happiest with something to hold, play or rewatch. A teenager may prefer an outing or money toward something they choose.
For the youngest children, your voice carries further than your handwriting. Penn State Extension's guide for long-distance grandparents notes that a recorded "letter" is easier for a young child to understand than a written one. That is why the first ideas below all play your voice or show your face.
The gift also has to fit the parents' home and rules, so ask them before you buy. Gift research finds that people value what they asked for more than givers expect, as our guide to what makes a good gift explains.
Which gifts let a grandchild hear your voice?
Recordable storybooks and audio players let a grandchild hear you read to them whenever they want, long after the birthday. They suit children from about 1 to 8.
- A recordable storybook. Hallmark's Recordable Storybooks cost $39.99 each in 2026. You read each page aloud into the book, and it plays your voice back as the child turns the pages. Titles include What Are Granddaughters Made Of?, What Are Grandsons Made Of? and Under the Same Moon, which is about loving someone far away. The example listing is rated for ages 18 months and up and runs on three AAA batteries. You record it at home, so post it early or bring it on your next visit.
- Yoto Make Your Own cards. If the family already owns a Yoto Player, you can record from your phone without posting anything. Yoto's own guide describes the simplest route: record an audio file on your phone and send it to the parents, who add it to a blank card in the Yoto app. Each card holds up to 100 tracks, and a pack of ten cards cost about $30 in 2026. A Yoto Player costs $109.99 and the Yoto Mini $79.99 in 2026, so buy one only after asking the parents.
- A Creative-Tonie. For a family with a Toniebox, a Creative-Tonie holds up to 90 minutes of recordings. The parents can invite you to their household in the tonies app, and you record stories and messages onto the child's figure from wherever you live.
What to record: their favorite picture book, a story about their mom or dad at the same age, the song you sang to them as a baby, and a short birthday message. Keep each track short, so a small child can find their favorite.
Can a grandparent far away send a birthday film the grandchild stars in?
Yes. yume's Birthday Adventure is an animated birthday film of about a minute that stars your grandchild. You order it, add 2 to 4 photos, their name, the age they are turning and one of eight worlds: astronaut, pirate, dinosaur, underwater, princess, unicorn, superhero or wizard. Your grandchild, drawn in warm 3D animation from the photos, follows a golden key through that world to a surprise party, and a song composed for the film sings their name.
Birthday Adventure fits a faraway grandparent for three reasons:
- Nothing to post or install. It arrives by email about 15 minutes after you send the details, with a link that plays on any phone, tablet or TV. The parents need no app and no account, and they can download the film to keep. Order it the evening before and it is still in time, wherever the family lives, with no shipping or customs.
- It shows you know them. You pick the world your grandchild loves this year. Optional notes about a pet, a favorite color or a toy are woven into the story and the song. Ask the parents to tell your grandchild the film is from you, or send a short video message of your own with it, so they know who chose those details.
- It plays on the day itself. The parents can put it on at breakfast or before the cake, or you can share your screen and watch it together on a video call.
You need the photos from the parents: ask for 2 to 4 recent, clear photos of your grandchild's face. Birthday Adventure costs €24 in 2026, paid once, and the page shows the price in your own currency. One edit is included, so you can change a detail after you watch it, and if you aren't happy with it, yume refunds you in full when you email within 30 days. Each film stars one child, so brothers and sisters each need their own film. The song is in English.
A video message you record yourself is free and shows your own face, and it pairs well with the film. Our guide to making a birthday video without editing skills compares the ways side by side.
To judge the style, watch the two example films on the page, starring the fictional Mateo as an astronaut and Frida as a wizard. yume's birthday video collection has films for older birthday people too.
Can a grandparent send a birthday song in their own words?
Yes. yume's Birthday Song turns what you write about your grandchild into a two-minute song, sung with their name in the chorus. You finish at least eight sentences about them, such as what makes them laugh or the funniest thing they said this year, and you can add a message of your own as the song's bridge. You pick a female or male singer and a style: pop, acoustic, country, R&B, rock or hip-hop.
Birthday Song suits a grandparent far away because the words are yours. The song carries your stories and your message, so your grandchild hears what you know about them, from far away, every time it plays. It comes with an animated music video starring your grandchild, with every sung word on screen, and it can include up to two of their favorite things, such as a pet or a best friend. The video ends on "Happy birthday" with their name and a line saying who it is from, such as "from Grandma and Grandpa", so your grandchild knows it came from you. You need one photo of them.
Birthday Song costs €15 in 2026, arrives by email as a link the parents can play or download, and includes one edit. The song is in English and fits any age, from a toddler to a teenager. Listen to the example songs to choose a style.
Which gifts keep arriving after the birthday?
A subscription turns one birthday gift into a parcel with your name on it every month. Children love getting their own mail, and each box is a reason to call and ask what they made. Choose one the parents agree to, and set it to start on the birthday.
- KiwiCo sends hands-on project crates by age, from the Panda line for babies to Tinker crates for 9 to 12-year-olds. Most lines started at $24 a month in 2026, with free US shipping for members.
- Little Passports World Adventures (ages 6 to 10) sends a box about a different country each month, starting with Brazil. It cost $25 to $32 a month in 2026, depending on the plan length, and it ships to the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. A gift message is included.
- A children's magazine in the child's language, posted by the publisher in their country, keeps arriving with no customs at all.
Add a postcard of your own now and then. A subscription box comes from a company; your handwriting is what tells the child it is from you.
Which gifts put the grandparent in the story?
Personalized books and photo books keep your face in the child's room, which matters most for a grandchild who sees you only a few times a year.
- A personalized picture book about the two of you. Wonderbly's Grandma Loves You is written for grandchildren aged 2 to 8 and uses the name the child calls you and a photo. In Grandma, Mommy and Me the characters can be changed to look like your family. Both started at $44.99 in 2026 and are printed and dispatched in 2 to 4 working days.
- A photo book of you and the child. Put in every photo you have of the two of you, with a line under each one saying where you were. It shows a small child that you have been part of their life all along.
How can grandparents join a birthday party by video call?
Ask the parents for a short slot that suits the child's day, and come with something to do. Video calls count as real time together, even for babies. The American Academy of Pediatrics says video chatting with young children shouldn't be considered screen time and calls it "relationship time". In a 2017 study by Lauren Myers and colleagues, toddlers who spent a week chatting live with a new person over FaceTime recognized and preferred that person afterwards. Toddlers who watched recorded videos of the same person did not.
- Agree the time in their time zone. Ten to fifteen minutes before the party or after breakfast works better than joining a room full of excited children.
- Have them open your present on the call. Ask the parents to keep it aside until you are on.
- Bring an activity. Read the book you sent from your own copy, sing happy birthday with a candle on your side of the screen, or play their Birthday Adventure film together. Caribu by Mattel puts picture books and drawing games into a shared video call; a day pass cost $2.99 in the App Store in 2026.
- Don't take a short call personally. Small children wander off. A five-minute call with a song still counts.
What should you give a grandchild aged 8 to 12 who lives far away?
Give a grandchild aged 8 to 12 something to make, read or write that brings you into it. At this age children still enjoy things more than outings, and they can manage a project or a letter on their own.
- A build kit you finish together on a call. A KiwiCo Tinker crate for ages 9 to 12, or any model kit, gives you a reason to call: they build while you watch, and you ask how each part works.
- A pen-pal set with return envelopes. Send good paper, stickers and envelopes already addressed and stamped to you, so writing back is easy. A letter from a grandchild is a gift to you too.
- A book series you read at the same time. Buy two copies of the first book, one for each of you, and talk about a chapter a week.
- A birthday song in your words. Birthday Song suits this age well: pick their favorite style and write about the year they had.
What should you give a teenage grandchild who lives far away?
Give a teenager a choice, or something to do with their friends. Research on children's gifts finds that children up to about 12 get more happiness from things, while teenagers start to prefer experiences, and their tastes change faster than a grandparent abroad can track.
- Money or a gift card, with a real note. Write what you hope they spend it on, or what you remember from your own birthday at their age. The note is what makes cash feel personal. For a longer-term gift, ask the parents whether you can add to a savings account in the child's name.
- An outing near them. Ask the parents to book a climbing session, a concert or a meal out with friends, and pay for it. They get the day; you get the photos.
- Something you share. Subscribe to the same magazine, read the same book, or play the same online game, and you have something to talk about every week.
- A birthday song in your words. Birthday Song, described above, suits a teenager too: pick hip-hop, rock or pop, and write about who they are becoming.
How do you make sure a gift from abroad arrives on time?
Order from a shop in the child's own country, or post it at least three weeks early. Distance adds days, and customs adds both days and fees, which the family has to pay before the parcel is handed over.
- Posting from the US. USPS gives 6 to 10 business days for Priority Mail International to many major countries, before any customs delay, and prices started at $32.65 in 2026.
- Battery toys. A toy with new lithium batteries already installed can go by international mail, but loose spare batteries, or batteries packed beside the device, are not allowed. Leave the spares out of the box.
- Sending to the UK. Gifts posted privately from abroad pay import VAT above £39 and customs duty above £135. A present you buy online and have a shop send does not count as a gift at all, so it is taxed like any purchase. The family pays the carrier before delivery, and Royal Mail adds an £8 handling fee.
- Ordering from a shop outside the EU for a child in the EU. From 1 July 2026 until 1 July 2028, online purchases up to €150 sent from outside the EU carry a flat €3 customs duty per item, on top of VAT. This rule covers shop orders; a parcel you post yourself is assessed by customs in the child's country.
Ordering from a local online shop avoids all of this. It usually arrives in a few days, the parents can return it if it is wrong, and you can add a gift message at checkout.
What should you ask the parents before you buy?
Ask the parents five things before you choose a gift for a grandchild far away. A grandparent who sees the child rarely can easily send something they already have, or something that doesn't fit the home.
- What is the child into right now, and what do they already own? Interests change fast; our guide to birthday gifts for a 6-year-old sorts ideas by interest.
- Is there room for it? A large or loud toy from far away is hard for the family to say no to, so check first.
- What are the house rules? Screens, sweets, apps and devices are the parents' call.
- When can you call, and when will the presents be opened? That decides your ship-by date and your video slot.
- What are the other grandparents giving? One message through the parents stops two families sending the same thing.
If you plan a birthday film, use the same message to ask for 2 to 4 recent photos of the child's face.
What can you give a grandchild far away if the birthday is tomorrow?
Give something that arrives by link or by local delivery. A birthday film like Birthday Adventure is ready about 15 minutes after you send the photos, and the parents can play it in the morning. A gift card from a shop in their town arrives by email. A video message you record on your phone, with a song and a story about their parent at their age, costs nothing and reaches them in seconds. Book a call for the day itself, and post a card afterwards: a birthday card that arrives late is still mail with their name on it.
